Which size should I choose?
1920 px wide is a full-screen photograph, still good quality. 1280 px wide is comfortable for email or a web page. 800 px wide is small and quick to send. 50% and 25% are simply half or a quarter of what you started with.
If a form or a website has told you the maximum size in megabytes rather than pixels, reduce the width first, and then lower the quality until the file size shown is small enough. The image compressor is built for exactly that job.
Social media image sizes
The drop-down list holds the sizes each network recommends, so you do not have to look them up. Instagram square posts are 1080 by 1080, portrait posts 1080 by 1350, and stories and reels 1080 by 1920. Facebook landscape posts are 1200 by 630 and cover photos 851 by 315. LinkedIn posts are 1200 by 627 and profile banners 1584 by 396. On X, posts are 1600 by 900 and headers 1500 by 500. YouTube thumbnails are 1280 by 720.
The networks do revise these from time to time, so if a size matters a great deal, it is worth confirming with the network itself.
When the new shape is different
A photograph is usually a rectangle, and a square post is not. When the shape you have asked for does not match the picture, you choose what happens. Fill it and trim the edges fills the whole space and trims the excess evenly from the sides; nothing is distorted, so this is the default. Show all of it, with bars keeps the whole picture and adds white bars. Stretch it to fit pulls the picture out of shape, which will make faces look wrong.
What this page cannot do
It resizes one picture at a time; for many pictures at once, the compressor can shrink a whole batch to a maximum width. Very large pictures, above roughly forty megapixels, may fail on a phone because the browser runs out of memory. A computer will usually manage them.
Questions
Does resizing reduce the quality?
Making a picture smaller throws away detail you would not see at the smaller size anyway. Making a picture larger than the original cannot add detail, so it will look softer.
Can I resize an iPhone photo?
Yes. HEIC photos from an iPhone open here directly, and you can save the result as a JPEG that every device and website accepts.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The work happens inside your web browser, on your own device. You can check: once this page has loaded, switch off your internet connection and it will still work. The page also tells your browser to refuse to load anything from, or send anything to, any other website, so nothing can be sent elsewhere even by accident.
