PNG to JPG

PNG or JPG: which should I use?
PNG keeps every pixel exactly and supports see-through backgrounds, which makes it ideal for logos, screenshots and diagrams. For photographs it produces large files.
JPG is designed for photographs. It discards detail the eye is unlikely to notice, so files are far smaller, but it has no transparency and repeated saving gradually degrades it.
What happens to transparent areas?
JPG cannot store transparency, so any see-through parts of your PNG become white. If you need to keep transparency, convert to WebP instead, or keep the PNG.
Questions
Will a screenshot look worse as a JPG?
Sometimes. Sharp text and flat colours can show faint smudging in a JPG. For screenshots, PNG is often the better choice.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The work happens inside your web browser, on your own device. You can check: once this page has loaded, switch off your internet connection and it will still work. The page also tells your browser to refuse to load anything from, or send anything to, any other website, so nothing can be sent elsewhere even by accident.
